My Dutch Bike Penelope

My Penelope

You guys know this, but I’ve had my eye on the dutch style bicycles for a while now, and they usually have to be imported, so I was really hoping to go through a local shop or distributor rather than ship them from the company themselves (I can only imagine the disaster that would ensue if I had to put it together myself). I called & emailed shops downtown Toronto but was unsure of which bike was right for me. There were specific things I was looking for that I had my heart on and didn’t want to settle for anything else, you know? I really wanted the Nexus 7 Hub, and the skirt cover, disc brakes, and the ability to hook a vintage wooden milk crate on the back and the wicker basket on the front. Everything I’d found so far had one thing, but not the other. I was ALMOST ready to order the bike that I wanted with a custom teal paint job from Switzerland but I was just waiting until after we moved to commit. But one day when Tom and I were out shopping, I saw a dutch bike perched in the window of a clothing store.

Of course, like the big goof I am, I asked if the bike was for sale. It wasn’t, but she gave me a card for the bike distributor, and that’s how I found Spokes ‘N Slopes in Milton, and I cannot say enough about the darling couple (or their lovely dog Bernie) behind this local shop. When I phoned Matt I was very honest and admitted shopping around and that I was pretty set on what I wanted, but would prefer to go through a local shop. He laughed and said he’d prefer that too, and when I told him about my dream bike he said, “How tall are you? I might have just the bike.” And boy, did he ever. I knew the moment I saw her she was the one. She was exactly like the bike I’ve had pinned to the vision board by the bed for the last year. Like, exactly– and with every spec she just kept getting better. She had the hub I wanted, the brakes, the color, she was half the price of ordering online or in Toronto, everything was perfect. Matt even special ordered her a brass bell and wicker basket.

Basically, thank you Spokes ‘N Slopes for uniting me with my dream bike.

And, because it’s technically Caturday, I present you with a super adorable cat photo I shared on my Facebook last night.

Hi Sara! Long time no talk! I’m so sorry I haven’t gotten around to seeing the blog recently, but I have spent the better part of this afternoon catching up, and goodness, you’ve been busy. Not only are your photographs absolute perfection, but you moved! Congrats! My boyfriend and I actually just moved in together too, and we are fostering a kitten we hope to end up adopting by the end of this week, so hopefully I can take part in Caturday posts (which I’m dorkishly excited about). But anywho. What attracted me to comment on this blog post is the fact that I’m in love with your bike. This is my ideal bike, seriously. I would absolutely die if DJ surprised me with something like this one day. We’ve been big into riding bikes lately, but we’re riding used bikes that still need some work. They were free, so I can’t complain. But I can’t wait for the day we aren’t broke, you know? 🙂

Hope you and Tom and the kitties are doing well!

Oh my goodness! This is the PERFECT bike! I’ve been looking for years for something like this. Sorry if I’m dense, but is this a locally made/custom bike, or vintage? I can’t find it anywhere, but man, I’m hoping I’m wrong. I hope you enjoy Penelope for many, many years to come! I think finding the perfect bike has to be one of the most rewarding experiences.

Congratulations, Sara – may have many happy rides with Penelope (the dream bike who stole your heart)!
It’s funny that on the other side of the world someone happens to do the exact same thing I am doing. I just bought a dutch bike, mint green in color, with a woven basket. I’d seen it in a shop window in January and thought it too expensive, plus I couldn’t justify another bike in the family. But as I absolutely had to have it, I sold my cruiser bike and got this one instead. One happy biker over here as well!

So, so, you! I love that color too!! lately I’ve seen so many bikes around downtown and while I do have my mountain bike, cruising on something pretty in the park near our house would be perfect. Love it!

Ahhh! I love it when things come together like that. I hope that you and Penelope have a long and happy life together! (Also, that first photo of Atlas sitting in the basket is pure squee.)

Thank you so much, Miki! Sometimes I’m stunned by what Atlas likes to explore and what he’s afraid of. I actually wheeled him around the apartment in Penelope and he didn’t even flinch, he just looked around at everything. What a weirdo. =P

Thanks, Trysha! You should learn! I hear it’s much easier to learn as an adult than as a kid. (I’m not sure how true that is, or if anyone can back that up for me.)
