Settling In

I asked on Facebook the other day about your favorite part about moving and was surprised by some of the responses. (By the way, thanks to those of you that took the time to weigh in.) I think my favorite part of the moving is tied between exploring new places and the purging of old stuff. We have boxes everywhere right now because I plan on going through everything as I pull it out and deciding again if it’s something we need, something we can do without and donate, or if it’s just no good to anyone anymore. Both Tom and I really want to cut a lot of “stuff” out of our life to help us narrow our focus on what’s important and what we enjoy- so I’m really looking forward to that.

At the same time, I realized what I don’t like about moving. As much as I try to embrace change, I’m only human, and I find I’m a little apprehensive about losing our favorite local spaces like Buka’s Cafe, Sushi In Sushi, and our bakery. It’s a little scary trying to find new favorite places and new grocery stores and a pet store that carries our food and litter in one place. But all of those are really just things that take some adjusting to. The important thing is home is where the heart is, and mine is here.

Aww, I love this post, and had I seen your Facebook post I would have answered.

I think the thing I like the least about moving, because I’m going so far, is leaving all my friends and family behind. I am really excited to start a new chapter in my life but am horrible at keeping in touch. I don’t want to lose those connections.

What I most look forward to though, is the decorating! haha I love pulling together my favorite things in a new space to create just the right atmosphere. I seriously think I would have been an interior designer if photography didn’t have such a strong hold on me.

Yes, I forgot you’re moving all the way up to Portland. That was the hardest part of me moving to Canada too. Now a days with the internet it’s easy to watch from a distance how people are doing on Facebook, but I find you actually keep in touch less that way.

I am so not good at decorating, but I’m hoping I can I can embrace the challenge of the house and get it looking pretty good. Maybe I can video chat with you for inspiration. =P

Getting rid of stuff is great, I agree. I hate the process of doing it, but feel so much better when our ‘stuff’ level is reduced! Good luck in the new location!

Not particularly related to this post: You have the BEST hats! 😀

(Best wishes on happy new discoveries and quick settling into your new space.)

I just answered on facebook, but I’ll say it again here: I just love getting rid of STUFF. You get comfortable in your surroundings and start collecting and holding on to things that really have no purpose. I love going through and donating, selling or chucking all that STUFF. It’s so freeing. It makes more room for what it really important… sanity. It’s funny, but we don’t have a lot of places we like to hangout in the area we are currently in. I will miss the library only being a few blocks away, but that’s about it. I’m looking forward to actually living in Portland! I’ve lived on the outskirts my whole life. I’m also looking forward to living somewhere where we can have cats! Eeeee!!
