Personal

A Small Piece of My Room

When I look back on my living spaces, I consistently regret not taking enough photos of my spaces, especially as they change. Last night we brought home a new stove pot because I accidentally ruined our last one by forgetting it on the stove and when we arrived home I completely rearranged the kitchen. But I kinda wish I’d taken a picture of the way it was before, because I’d like to keep those memories. I want to preserve our apartment as it changes so I can look back when we had our very first apartment and didn’t know a thing about decorating.

The same thing happened in my bedroom a few weeks ago. After Tom and I tossed around the idea of moving, I made it a slow moving goal to slowly clear out a lot of excess stuff we’ve accumulated. I started with the bedroom, clearing out a lot of old make up and junk in our bookshelf. Most of it was make up I didn’t use on a daily basis and old things I brought with me when I immigrated to Canada that I just kind of panic-packed. (Oh, you’ve probably panic packed before. You know, when you go on vacation and open your suitcase and say, I brought the ___ but forgot my underpants?)

The result left me with a barren top shelf that I ended up really enjoying personalizing.

Even if what in the pictures it’s not exactly my style, I kinda love it 🙂

What a lovely glimpse of not one, but two forms of intimacy. A sneak peak of a private part of you and a look at your relationship. What lovely things you have your dresser, yet ‘things’ seems so unkind a word…

You’ve also inspired me to capture the little bits and pieces of our home and we go along. We are in a different phase, having recently moved into a new home and things area taking their time organically emerging and revealing where they want to be. Capturing that is a wondering idea. Thanks Sara!

Thanks so much, Lauren! We’ve lived in our apartment for almost three years now (the longest I’ve ever personally been in one place as an adult on my own) and it’s just now starting to piece together in certain areas. I definitely feel like ours was slow and organic as well!

it looks lovely! the nail polish holder is so sweet.
I often remember I wanted to take a ‘before’ photo when I’m halfway through the reorganising and the whole area just looks like a mess.

I’m the same! I have crap all around me and I think, “Well if I take a photo now it will just look like I’m a huge slob all the time.” Haha.

And thanks! The nail polish holder is actually a thrifted nut cracker container thing that I just really liked and wanted to find a use for.

Your brush + mirror + comb collection just kill me dead. I like the sense of the victorian that you’ve injected your space with. I am charmed.

Thanks, Jasmine. Can you believe that mirror + comb + brush + small jewelry box were $10 a Goodwill? I FREAKED when I saw them. Several old ladies and I were gushing over them while I checked out. It’s so rare to find a complete set now a days. =)

    Hi Sara,
I stumbled on your post while I was on twitter and your wonderful pictures matched perfectly with the song I was listening (Tom McRae – Human Remains). I couldn’t resist to put it as a recommandation in a comment 😉

I’m listening to it now- and it’s eerily fitting! (And a beautiful song.)
